Haringey District Heating Scheme: Utility Search and Utility Mapping

Project overview:

In 2021, the UK government announced a major drive to expand heat network projects, aiming to power more homes with green energy. Heat networks—also known as district heating—deliver heat from a central source through underground pipes carrying hot water, replacing individual boilers with a single, highly efficient system.

Haringey Council has secured funding for two of these projects: the Wood Green District Heating Network and the Tottenham Hale and Broadwater Farm District Heating Network. Once complete, the schemes will provide reliable, low-carbon heat to nearly 10,000 homes.

A major engineering consultancy appointed Premier Energy to undertake a Utility Record Search and PALM 128 Utility Map in order to assist them in the planning and route proving stage of the project.

Premier Energy have a track record of delivery high quality utility search reports and clear utility mapping, particularly on complex urban engineering schemes. This project covered over 700 ha of north London.

Premier Utility Search Report:

Using our intelligent search processes, we identified over 30 utility companies who were known to operate in and around the area. These were contacted by our dedicated in-house team of utility search experts.

The Utility Search Report comprised all the C2 utility maps retuned by the incumbent utility companies as well maps from independent network operators in the vicinity. The report included our intuitive RAG rating system to clearly identify affected utility companies within the site, and those nearby or adjacent to the site. The Utility Search Report was delivered within 20 working days of the initial order and was fully PAS128 (Quality Level D) and HSG47 compliant.

PALM 128 Utility Map:

The PALM 128 Utility Map is our innovative multi-layered interactive utility map that brings together all the utility assets from C2 utility records into a single georeferenced utility map. The PALM 128 Utility Map is fully compliant with PAS 128 making it an essential information source for Health and Safety compliance. Utilities are displayed in separate layers and can be turned on/off to be viewed in any combination. This makes it simple for users to view complex utility information in a simple straightforward format whilst understanding the proximity of proposed works to existing utility equipment.

For this project the PALM 128 Utility Map was used as part of a route proving assessment. The PALM’s  clear presentation of existing utilities helped our clients engineering team to determine the most economic, safe and potentially quickest route of installation.

Client benefits

After an initial consultation with our client, it was agreed that the PALM 128 Utility Map would show different voltages and gas pressures on their own layers. By allowing users to view these networks in isolation it made the identification of major constraints easier, aiding the overall route proving and planning process.

Our client was working to a tight schedule so a staggered delivery schedule was agreed.

Premier Energy delivered the finished PALM128 Utility Maps as an interactive PDFs as well as DWGs for integration into CAD systems.
